Ebook About “Christopher Moore is a very sick man, in the very best sense of that word.” —Carl HiassenA magnificent “Comedy d’Art” from the author of Lamb, Fool, and Bite Me, Moore’s Sacré Bleu is part mystery, part history (sort of), part love story, and wholly hilarious as it follows a young baker-painter as he joins the dapper Henri Toulouse-Lautrec on a quest to unravel the mystery behind the supposed “suicide” of Vincent van Gogh.It is the color of the Virgin Mary's cloak, a dazzling pigment desired by artists, an exquisite hue infused with danger, adventure, and perhaps even the supernatural. It is . . .Sacré BleuIn July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his own life . . . and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friends—baker-turned-painter Lucien Lessard and bon vivant Henri Toulouse-Lautrec—who vow to discover the truth about van Gogh's untimely death. Their quest will lead them on a surreal odyssey and brothel-crawl deep into the art world of late nineteenth-century Paris.Oh là là, quelle surprise, and zut alors! A delectable confection of intrigue, passion, and art history—with cancan girls, baguettes, and fine French cognac thrown in for good measure—Sacré Bleu is another masterpiece of wit and wonder from the one, the only, Christopher Moore.Book Sacre Bleu: A Comedy d'Art Review :
I adore the writing style of Christopher Moore & have read/own many of his titles. A number of them tie as far as my Christopher Moore favorites list goes, but this book is by far, one of my most favorite books of all of the books I own! (I hoard books, so that's saying something. Book addiction.) Being an artist and art history major, I found this extra funny, probably too funny. Moore weaves a wonderfully researched tale that could very well have been plausible - while filled with magic. The story contains fantastic elements of intrigue, suspense, mystery, sorrow, endearing love, of course, Moore's unique, colorful sense of humor, & quite frankly, one of the creepiest, weasle-y-est villains I've ever read. You definitely do not have to be an art nerd to appreciate & fall in love with Christopher Moore's "Sacre Bleu". The core of inspiration, the tragedy and beauty of the artist & his relationship with his art is described in the most creative, passionate fashion. I keep this book on my nightstand and also have a copy for my kindle. Enjoy! I like impressionist painters, Van Gogh in particular, and the cover of this book was so enticing I asked for a hard cover copy for Xmas and ended up getting it myself with a giftcard. Held onto the book for awhile-- saving it, I guess. When I finally started it the first 20pp or so were a bit of a slog, but the story really picked up after.Moore is a satirist who's played with science, vampires, and religion. He also had a really fantastic retelling of Lear that shows he has a great attention to detail and an affection for good literature. Here, he demonstrates his ability to really dig into characters, create mythos, and celebrate art in a way that is totally new. Further, he creates a really engaging character in Bleu and her 'handler' and sets up an interesting premise for them to 'play' in. I wish I could relive the experience of reading this book for the first time because it was just that good.Very much looking forward to where his imagination takes me next!
